According to Reuters, citing local authorities, more than 570 people are missing in Nepal due to flooding. Of these, over 400 are foreign citizens.
The report notes that among the 579 missing tourists, more than 400 are foreigners. In addition, the death toll from the disaster has reached 162.
The tragedy unfolded on the border with China. The cause of the powerful flows was a sharp rise in the water level of the Bhote Koshi River, which originates in the mountains of Tibet. At least four Russians were in the disaster zone.
The flood also affected the Gyirong (Jilong) checkpoint in Shigatse Prefecture of the Tibet Autonomous Region. Chinese media report three dead, and searches for another 558 people are ongoing.
Nepal's Foreign Minister Shishir Khana said the emergency was caused by an earthquake and a subsequent landslide. Experts do not rule out that the flood could have been caused by a glacial lake outburst.
