According to Politico, a bill in the US House of Representatives that would impose new sanctions on Russia is facing significant opposition from Democrats, and there is no unity among Republicans in supporting it.
The publication notes that the prospects for the document's approval by Republicans remain uncertain.
House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries, speaking to journalists, expressed concern that passing the bill would give the Donald Trump administration opportunities for abuse.
"The risk is that it (the document - ed.) grants authority to impose tariffs and sanctions to Donald Trump and his administration, which we believe they will abuse," Jeffries said.
The US Senate on August 7 approved by a overwhelming majority a bill on new sanctions against Russia, developed on the initiative of the late member of the House, Lindsey Graham*. The initiative provides for the introduction of 100-percent tariffs on goods from the five largest buyers of Russian energy and 500-percent tariffs on all imports from Russia to the US. The document was sent to the House of Representatives, but its consideration will begin only in September.
Russia has repeatedly stated that it will cope with the sanctions pressure that began several years ago and continues to intensify. The authorities emphasized that unfriendly states lack the courage to admit the failure of such a policy.
Moscow also noted that the West made a serious mistake by refusing to buy Russian energy resources: this will lead to even greater dependence due to rising prices, since purchases will continue, but through intermediaries.
