According to the regional election commission, after processing all ballots in the election to the parliament of the federal state of Saxony-Anhalt, the opposition right-wing party Alternative for Germany (AfD) is winning.

Preliminary results show that the AfD receives 43.8 percent of the votes. In second place with a large gap is the Christian Democratic Union (CDU), which received 17.2 percent.

The third position is occupied by the Social Democratic Party of Germany (SPD) with a result of 9.3 percent. Slightly behind it are the Greens and the Left parties, which received 8.9 and 8.6 percent of the votes, respectively.

The five-percent barrier was also crossed by the Sahra Wagenknecht Alliance - Reason and Justice (BSW), which received 5.3 percent.

According to preliminary data, out of 83 seats in the Landtag of Saxony-Anhalt, the AfD will get 39 mandates, the CDU 15, the SPD, the Left party and the Greens will get eight seats each, and the BSW five seats.

With this distribution, no party gets a majority in parliament, so a coalition will be required to form the state government. All parties that entered the Landtag, except the BSW, declared before the elections that they refuse to cooperate with the AfD. Thus, the AfD can lead the state government only in a coalition with the BSW.

The elections to the Landtag of Saxony-Anhalt took place on Sunday, with 16 political parties and 398 candidates participating. Voter turnout was 77.8 percent.

Experts believe that the results of the vote in Saxony-Anhalt, as well as the upcoming September 20 elections to the Berlin House of Representatives and the Landtag of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, will have an impact beyond these states and could significantly change the political situation in the country.

According to polls, in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania the AfD also leads with the support of 35 percent of voters. In Berlin, 18 percent are ready to vote for it, while the Left party and the CDU/CSU bloc are ahead of it by only one or two percent.
