Washington has notified the Persian Gulf states that at the upcoming talks with Tehran it intends to focus on the Iranian nuclear program rather than on restoring shipping through the Strait of Hormuz. This was reported by the CNN television channel.
According to the channel's website, citing three sources, representatives of the Trump administration privately informed the Persian Gulf countries of their desire to focus future US-Iran talks on Tehran's nuclear program rather than on opening the strait.
Before the escalation of the conflict in the region, Hormuz was one of the key routes of world energy trade. About a fifth of global supplies of oil and liquefied natural gas passed through it.
In the middle of last month, Donald Trump stated that this route was open for shipping and that a naval blockade was in effect against the Islamic Republic of Iran. The Iranian side, however, asserts the opposite. Because of the continuing tension, the number of tankers and gas carriers passing through it has fallen to single figures.
Tehran's nuclear program remains one of the key issues in the bilateral conflict. In particular, the US insists on a suspension of uranium enrichment by Iran, as well as on the dismantling of facilities damaged during the American operation "Midnight Hammer" in June 2025.
