Aleksandar Vucic has signed a document marking his departure from the post of President of Serbia.
In the evening, his supporters came to the building of the head of state's administration to support the politician. Addressing those gathered, Vucic expressed gratitude to them for the victories won in the 2017 and 2022 presidential elections.
According to him, on Monday he will hand over powers to the acting head of state, parliament speaker Ana Brnabic. Presidential elections must be held before the end of December.
On Saturday, during a telephone conversation with Vladimir Putin, Vucic thanked him for cooperation over 14 years and expressed hope that future presidents of Serbia would conduct foreign policy just as responsibly, maintaining "a certain balance between all factors on the international arena."
Early elections were sought by protesting students and opposition supporters. The demonstrations began in November 2024 after the collapse of a canopy at the railway station in Novi Sad, which killed 16 people. The demonstrators accuse the current authorities of systemic corruption, cronyism and negligence. The situation in the cities escalated in mid-August 2025, when protesters began confronting police and blocking roads in the evening and at night. The authorities condemned the violence and called for a reduction in tensions.
