Asked about the visit of his special envoy Steve Witkoff to Russia, Donald Trump said that certain events could soon take place in the context of settling the conflict in Ukraine. The head of the White House said this to journalists.
According to him, Witkoff went to discuss a couple of issues: the conflict in Ukraine, on which, as Trump believes, something will happen, as well as the return of a very good person. The US president did not provide details or timelines.
Earlier this week, Trump already stated that ending the conflict is closer than ever. He stressed that he would not impose new sanctions against Russia because of the possibility of a speedy agreement.
Witkoff arrived in St. Petersburg on Wednesday. Following three hours of talks, Vladimir Putin stated his readiness to resume trilateral contacts on building a security system for Moscow and Kyiv. According to him, they could take place in the first ten days of November.
The US president's special envoy also thanked the Russian leader for the release of American Stephen Hubbard, who was convicted in 2024 in a mercenarism case. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov explained that Putin made this decision on humanitarian grounds.
