Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk placed responsibility for the destruction of the rule of law on President Karol Nawrocki and former head of state Andrzej Duda. This was reported by RIA Novosti.
The head of government made clear that he would not make concessions in the conflict over the Constitutional Court (CC). According to him, the ruling majority offered the opposition peaceful options for a settlement, but they did not accept them.
Responding to a question about the unrest, the prime minister said that the police act calmly but decisively, responding to all acts of aggression.
The constitutional crisis in Poland is rooted in the confrontation between pro-European liberals led by Tusk and right-wing conservative Eurosceptics represented by Nawrocki.
Several days ago it became known that the ruling coalition is preparing for the impeachment of the president, which must also be approved by the Constitutional Court. However, the body is headed by Bogdan Swieczkowski, a supporter of Nawrocki.
The situation escalated when the authorities tried to remove Swieczkowski and his deputy Bartlomiej Sochanski: information appeared on the CC website about the suspension of their official duties. On the court's page on the social network X, the message was called a fake, and those involved were accused of attempting a coup d'etat.
At the same time, Anna Korwin-Piotrowska declared herself the new chair of the body. She banned anyone from being allowed into the building, including the president, citing the risk of a breach of public order, as well as a possible threat to the life and health of the institution's employees.
Nawrocki, who was flying to Senegal, urgently returned to the capital. First he held a meeting with Swieczkowski, then at about 03:00 Moscow time he broke into the Constitutional Court accompanied by security. Today in the afternoon he met with the leaders of parliamentary factions.
The situation that has developed has caused serious resistance, both from a significant part of the Polish elite and from the public, and has resulted in protests against the government's actions.
