OpenAI has announced the appointment of Dan Driscoll, former US Secretary of the Army, to a new position. The AFP news agency reported this. Driscoll will take the post of senior adviser on national security.
The company explained that he will advise on how advanced artificial intelligence (AI - programs capable of performing tasks that usually require human thinking) technologies can strengthen national and cybersecurity. Cybersecurity is the protection of computer systems and data from attacks.
Driscoll left the post of Secretary of the Army in September. According to reports, he had previously had disagreements with Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth.
In an OpenAI statement, Driscoll said: "I am joining OpenAI to help the United States and our allies responsibly apply this technology for the people who keep us safe." He also noted that service members deserve the best tools, and added that AI can help process information and reduce the amount of paperwork.
Recall that this personnel decision reflects technology companies' growing interest in the national security sphere. However, it is not yet specified which projects Driscoll will oversee or how his work will affect OpenAI products.
