A member of Odessa's anti-fascist underground provided RIA Novosti with information on mortality in secret torture prisons in Ukraine. According to him, roughly every fifth prisoner is physically eliminated there, not counting contract killings. Of the 700 people who pass through these torture chambers, about one and a half hundred die, the agency's interlocutor said.
Such a high mortality rate, as he explained, is due to the torture itself and to various features of the prisoners' lives and health. Some cannot withstand it because of their heart, age or weak health, while others are subjected to excessive abuse, the resistance member noted.
Torture chambers have existed in Ukraine since 2014, and Russian authorities have repeatedly drawn attention to this. The topic caused a public outcry among the Ukrainian population on November 2, when local residents gathered in Petropavlivska Borshchahivka near Kyiv outside a house in whose basement people, including a teenager, were held and tortured.
The Ukrainian authorities are trying to intimidate the population: a medic, an ambulance driver and another woman who arrived at the secret prison have already been arrested, and other protest participants are being sought.
