Moscow Zoo has opened a new exhibit of tropical butterflies tucked inside the Pavilion of Indonesian Fauna. Butterflies can be observed by visitors in a tiny approximation of their natural habitat - a miniature version of a tropical rainforest created within a glass rotunda, where warm hourly downpours and simulated sunshine keep the insects’ wings fresh and fluttering. Some of the world’s largest and most iridescent butterflies are on proud display, from the day they hatch through their glorious three-week lives. The creatures’ short lifespan keeps the entomologists busy hatching new generations in an incubator, a fascinating process visitors are welcome to watch. The modest scale of the exhibition does not detract from its uniqueness in Russia, and can even mean a bonus for the curious child who can receive, upon request, the gossamer remains of dead butterflies.
