Maria Sharapova has lost the final of the Sony Ericsson Open in Miami going down in straight sets to Victoria Azerenka from Belarus.
The Russian was hoping to end an 11-month drought without a title but this was not to be her day.
She started really badly against Azarenka, who breezed through the first set 6-1.
Having made 43 unforced errors in this match she was trailing 4-1 down in the second.
Her trademark fighting spirit saw her save two championship points to pull things back to 5-4, but that was the extent of her comeback as Azarenka closed out the win in the next game.
Sharapova lost her fourth consecutive final. But her opponent has been in red-hot form knocking out Kim Clijsters and Vera Zvonareva along the way lifting her to number six in the world rankings.
