Arch Moscow, the oldest and largest architectural event in the capital, which combines a commercial exhibition with an architecture festival, is being held in the city`s Central House of Artists for the 16th time. Concentrating on the best architectural ideas and solutions while concurrently reflecting on the most recent international trends, such as green architecture and cultural preservation, every year the event discovers new names from both Russia and the rest of the world. This year`s main project "Next!", the brainchild of curator Bart Goldhoorn, focuses on young architects emerging each year on the professional stage with their highly innovative works and true stories of success. According to Goldhoorn, "the architect`s individuality is a brand and architecture itself - a reflection of both personality in general and the author`s identity in particular". As a part of the project, an exhibition of six young architects from six countries - France, Denmark, the UK, the Netherlands, Austria and Germany, are displaying their projects in the context of personal development. The cycle begins from essays and thesis work and ends with the realization of their first projects, a progression that best reflects Goldhorn`s vision. Another ambitious display within Arch Moscow is the "A City Called Spain" project - an overview of Spanish architecture corresponding with the year of cross-cultural exchange between Russia and Spain. Several years ago, Arch Moscow also began to nominate festival participants for "best architect of the year." This is not exactly an award, as the winner does not receive any significant prizes, though he does receive the opportunity to have a personal display of his work featured at the following Arch Moscow festival. This time, it was Vladimir Plotkin, Chief Architect at TPO Reserve bureau. His display demonstrated that an architect is first and foremost an artist, as he unveiled seven carved installations, each duplicating the patterns of Plotkin`s buildings` facades as well as a film presenting most of the architects` projects with the use of very professional video graphics. Other sections of the exhibition are dedicated to the widely discussed project of Skolkovo, New Names, which is displaying projects from 20 nominees for Russia`s most prestigious prize for young architects, the "Avant-garde Prize", an exhibition of well-known Dutch architect Ben van Berkel, who will read a lecture on May 28, an exhibition of wooden architecture from Riga, and much more. Apart from the main display, the program of the architectural forum traditionally features discussions, lectures and master classes on various aspects of architecture and the latest trends in the field. The display will operate until May 29.
