The Women`s Tennis Association has launched a campaign to put paid to loud screaming by female tennis players on the court after a growing number of complaints by spectators. ╜ A push to reduce decibel levels among young players is on, with special attention being paid to Nick Bollettieri`s Tennis Academy in the USA. This famous school has produced some of the worst offenders when it comes to screaming on court, including Russia`s Maria Sharapova - though Bollettieri insists it`s something he has never cultivated or encouraged. The Russian is believed to hold the record for the loudest screams on a WTA tour. Her screams at Wimbledon 2009 reached 101.2 decibels, which is almost the level of police sirens. Belarusian Viktoria Azarenka is another champion screamer. Wimbledon tennis tournament equipment measured her on-court screams at 95 dB. "I`ve played this way since I was a child. It helps me to increase the power of the shot and I cannot change anything," said Azarenka. "Screams were part of the sport for years," said WTA chief executive Stacey Ellester. "But modern technology, namely the large number of microphones on the courts, has brought this phenomenon significantly closer to the viewers. Men also allow themselves shouts on the court (Rafael Nadal is the loudest), but in women`s, they are especially penetrating."
