Strict criteria in new cleaning contracts will ensure the cleanliness of school toilets, the New South Wales education department said. Under the four year contracts, worth $218 million per year, contractors will have to ensure dirty toilets are cleaned within two hours. They will also have to address other cleanliness problems in schools within a day. Principals, TAFE managers and site managers will regularly inspect the standard of cleaning. Education Minister Carmel Tebbutt said the new contracts would give principals more power to ensure that cleaning standards were maintained. "I do know that principals say it can be frustrating when a school is not cleaned to an effective standard and when they try and get it fixed it can be time consuming," Ms Tebbutt said. "So what these new contracts do is ... put clear standards in place." Contracts have been awarded to Tempo Services Ltd, Broadlex Services Pty Ltd, Menzies International (Australia) Pty Ltd and Spotless P & F Ltd. Cleaning contracts for some parts of the state are yet to be announced. AAP
