Latvia asks Russia to lay gas pipeline through its territory
Latvia thinks it is expedient to lay Northern-European gas pipeline through its territory instead of Baltic sea bottom.

Latvia thinks it is expedient to lay Northern-European gas pipeline through its territory instead of Baltic sea bottom.
This was announced on press-conference in Moscow by Ambassador Plenipotentiary of republic in Moscow Andris Teikmanis. He noted that there are large underground gas storages in Latvian territory and "it will be unwise not to use them". Moreover he noticed that construction of pipe line 1047 kilometers long through Baltic bottom is not safe because there are lots of explosive and chemical materials there".
"Russia and Germany has right to make an agreement but our argumentation is still important", - he added.
As a reminder, at the end of last week presidents of Latvia, Lithuania and Estonia discussed project of Russian-German gas pipe line through Baltic bottom construction. "Construction of gas pipe line is vital for countries of region but EU and Scandinavian countries should pay attention on potential threats", - declared president of Lithuania.
Putting into operation is planned on 2010. Total investments necessary for project realization exceed 4 milliards of euro.
Several friendly announcements of Teikamanis can be explained by Latvian wish to lay gas pipeline through Latvian territory. In particular, he declared that Latvia makes no territorial claims to Russia. He noticed that treaty about state frontier is not signed yet but hopefully this document "will not be shelved". But at the same time in Ambassador`s opinion, events must not be hastened in this question.
