The toxic leak from China approached Khabarovsk suburb by the river Amur at about 8 pm local time (1 pm Moscow time). Its appearance within the precincts of the city is expected in the nearest half an hour. Regional center of the Russian Emergency Ministry reported that the first signs of benzene contaminated water were registered at about 3 pm local time. Appearance of contaminated water is proved by unpleasant scent from the water sample taken for analysis. However, quick analysis showed toxic substance content not exceeding 0,4% of maximum allowable concentration. In this connection, the city’s authorities have made the final decision not to cut off water supply, explained the Russian Emergency Ministry officials. On Tuesday about 6 thousand Khabarovsk citizens were left without water because of technological cut off. After finishing the levee construction on Kazakevichev channel water supply in Krasnaya Rechka district and the settlement Bychikha was enabled. According to specialists’ data the benzene spot length is about 190 km. By December 25, the spot is expected to pass through the river near Khabarovsk. According to the forecasts, on January 2, the spot will approach Amursk and Komsomolsk-on-Amur. Chemical substances got onto the river Songuah, falling into Amur, after the accident at a chemical plant in China on November 13. about 100 tons of benzene contaminated the river waters.
