After "Gazprom" reduced pressure at entrance to gas-transport system of Ukraine in the morning of January 1, several European countries declared about sharp decrease of pressure in gas networks. In particular, deficit of fuel in Austria amounted to 18% from necessary volume of natural gas, in Hungary - 40%. Deficit of fuel experienced Poland, Slovakia, Romania, Germany, France and Italy.
"Gazprom" accused Ukraine in unsanctioned Russian gas, meant for European consumers, takeoff. Later vice-chairman of "Gazprom" Alexander Medvedev announced that during January 1, 2006 Ukraine has stolen 100 millions of cubic meters of gas from Russian export supplies to Europe with total cost of $25 millions.
Representative of gas concern has promised to send additional 95 millions of cubic meters of gas during the day to compensate unsanctioned gas takeoff by Ukraine and, therefore, to restore gas supply of Europe according to contracts by evening of January 3.
Along with that Medvedev has paid attention that "situation when Ukraine continues to steal gas from pipeline and Russia supplies additional gas to European consumers can not last forever". By his words, "Gazprom" warned all foreign partners that responsibility for possible disruption of supplies completely lies on Ukrainian side.
Ukrainian president Victor Yusenko has declared that country fulfills international obligations and provides uninterrupted transit of gas to countries of Western Europe, mobilizing own reserves.
Meanwhile Ukrainian minister of Foreign Affairs Boris Tarasyuk informed that Russian-Ukrainian negotiations will resume on January 3. But he noted that "Russia didn`t demonstrate preparedness for this event".
