Russian premier-minister Mikhail Fradkov appealed to European Union with request to exert influence upon Ukraine so that it will provide uninterrupted supply of Russian gas. This request was stated in letter of premier to chairman of EU Committee and was written on January 3, 2006. In letter Fradkov confirmed that Russia intends to fulfill all obligations on gas supply to Europe. But it is not inconceivable that supplies can be disrupted if Ukraine continues unauthorized gas takeoff from gas pipelines. From their side, Moldavian and Ukrainian presidents Vladimir Voronin and Victor Yushenko applied to EU with request to freeze prices on Russian gas. Presidents asked EU "to introduce moratorium at prices on gas and payments for Russian gas transit until negotiations are over". Meeting of EU countries, devoted to situation around Russian gas transit through Ukraine, is planned on January 4 in Brussels. The fact is that several European countries have declared about sufficient reduction of pressure in gas pipelines after Russia cut off the gas to Ukraine. Russia insists that failure of pressure in gas pipelines is caused by unauthorized gas takeoff by Ukrainian side. By data of "Gazprom", Ukrainian side has stolen 100 and 118 millions of cubic meters of gas correspondingly. Representatives of Ukraine deny this fact. "Gazprom" promised to deliver additional 95 millions of cubic meters of gas to restore pressure in gas pipelines. It is expected that pressure will reach the normal level by January 3. The same day negotiations on gas issue between Russia and Ukraine will resume. Russia has already applied to EU for help in gas conflict but official position of EU was that Moscow and Kiev should settle down the issue without assistance of the third side.
