Orthodoxy Advent finishes on January 6, it has started on November 28. The Advent was established in the time of early Christianity, so that believers could cleanse themselves with penance, prayer and abstinence. Yury Levada’s Analytical centre reported the results of poll, according to which about two thirds of Russian people (60%) are going to celebrate Christmas. Most of them are young people under 25, Universities’ graduates, with relatively high income (over 12 thousand rubles per family member a month), housewives, specialists, unemployed and women in general, inhabitants of Central, Ural, Far east Federal Districts, inhabitants of Moscow and small towns with population of 10-10,000 people. According to the sociologists’ data in 2004 59% of Russians were going to celebrate Christmas, in 2003 - 70%, in 2002 - 69%, in 2001 - 74%. The Experts of "Levada Centre" connect the two-year decrease of number of people celebrating Christmas with long New Year’s holidays established in the country in 2005.
