Main Orthodox cathedral of Russia - the Cathedral of Christ the Savior - became the center of great Christmas holiday greeting for all country. Solemn divine service is headed by Patriarch of Moscow and all Russia Aleksey II along with supreme clergy of Russian Orthodox Church. By 22:00 p.m. about 5 thousands people gathered under vaulting of festively decorated cathedral. The entrance to cathedral was free. Premier-minister Fradkov, head of Russian presidential administration Sobyanin, vice-speaker of State Duma Vladimir Zhirinovsky, Chechen premier-minister Abramov, chairman of Sacred Altar in Russia archbishop Antonio Mennini presented at divine service. Direct broadcasting of divine service was translated by "First" and "Russia" TV channels all over the country. Patriarch Aleksey II congratulated multi-millionaire flock of Russian Orthodox church with Christmas, wishing every person God`s help on course of life. "Holy Christmas days turn our thoughts and hearts to God, serve to our spiritual edification, refresh feeling of unity with God and each other in Church of the Christ", - appealed Patriarch to Russian nation. Reminding that "outward world more often calls people to worship idols of glory, prosperity and pleasure", Patriarch emphasized that this way leads to nowhere. Russian president Vladimir Putin, being on business trip in Yakutia, visited Transfiguration cathedral in Yakutsk. At entrance to cathedral the head of the state was greeted by bishop of Yakutia and Lensk Zosima. President attended service together with common parishioner, citizens of Yakutsk. When Putin was leaving the cathedral, parishioners greeted president with Christmas, wished him happiness and health, thanked for visiting of Yakutia, despite of frost (the temperature in Yakutsk is 50 degrees below zero). Though more than 120 nationalities live in Yakutia, the majority of population are Orthodox believers. By tradition of East Church celebration of Christmas is forerun by 40-day advent, which starts on November 15 by old and on November 28 by new style. On Christmas Eve the believers should keep especially strict fast. This day is called sochelnik because church prescribes to eat sochivo - soaked and sodden corn or rice, dressed with honey, and also beans, peas and vegetables.
