The head of Federal Agency for Press and Mass Communications Mikhail Seslavinsky, performing speech at the inter-industrial conference "Media of mass information, books publishing, polygraphy. Results of 2005 and development perspectives", suggested announcing the year of 2007 to be the Year of Reading.

Results of 2005 and development perspectives", suggested announcing the year of 2007 to be the Year of Reading.
"We are sure, that the national program of reading is necessary to be accepted. As the first step we could announce the next year a National Year of Reading, and concentrate on it efforts of publishers, pedagogical staff, Librarians and cultural community", he said.
According to Seslavinsky`s words, the research shows that during the last two years the share of active readers decreased from 26% to 23%, 52% of adults don`t buy books, 37 % don`t even read.
"It is important now for Russia not to miss the moment, when active government policy is able to change the situation", noted Seslavinsky.
