On March 6 Orthodox Christians go on the Lent. "The Lent is a time for repentance, when a man should glance back at passed course of life, test himself in the light of Christian commandments", - appealed the Patriarch of Moscow and all Russia Aleksey II. The Lent prepared Christians to dignified celebration of Easter holiday (on April 23 - this year). 40-day Lent is considered the main out of 4 annual fasts and is connected with evangelical narrative about Christ`s 40-day fast in desert. Immediately after the Lent a Holy week starts. This week reminds about last days of Jesus Christ`s life on Earth and his sufferings. Fasting is a refusal not only from certain food but from pernicious habits and amusements. This is a time for thoughtful mood and diligent prayers. The goal of every fast is temperance, purification of soul from passion and sinful thoughts, subjecting of body and soul to spirit. Therefore, to be angry and depressed during the fast is the same sin as to drink wine or eat meat. Orthodox Church appeals to believers to refrain from meat, milk, eggs and fish in food. Fish is allowed only on holidays of the Annunciation (April 7) and Palm Sunday (April 16). Abstinent is permitted to eat caviar on Lazarev Saturday (April 15).
