Winter crops perished on the area of 2,5-2,8 million hectare in Russia this year. It is 18-20% of the total area. In the past year the winter crops perished on 0,9 millions hectares. According to existing data of the Russian Federal Service on Hydrometeorology and Environmental Control, the basic reason for the loss of sowings is January strong frost and insufficient snow cover. According to the data of the Russian Federal Service on Hydrometeorology and Environmental Control, in the southwestern, the central, south eastern regions, the Volga regions, and also in a number of other districts of southern region the depth of snow cover was from 2 to 7 cm, and minimum soil temperature at depths of the knot of the bushing out of winter crops was down to - 12- 16 degrees, which was dangerous, especially for the under-developed plants. In some fields in the Volga and southern federal regions there was the ice crust on the soil, which also damaged the plants. The most difficult situation with the crops appeared to be in the Volga federal region, where their loss was fixed at 29-31% of the area. Moreover in Bashkirya winter crops perished on half of the sowed areas, in Mordovia - over a third, in Saratov region - on 38-40% of the area.
