Media: head of Cyprus does not support the extension of sanctions the EU against Russia
The head of the Republic of Cyprus Nikos Anastasiadis said that opposes the expansion of sanctions against Russia from the EU because of the situation in Ukraine, informs on Sunday, Xinhua news Agency.

"We want to protect further deterioration in relations between Russia and the EU ", - quotes Agency the message Anastasiadis.

the head of Cyprus said that the majority of EU countries take a similar position, supporting more diplomatic steps than the introduction of additional sanctions against Russia.

"Cyprus and Russia have traditionally enjoyed good relations, and it will not change ", - said Anastasiadis.

Relations between Russia and the West deteriorated in connection with the situation in Ukraine. At the end of July last year, the EU and the US from point penalties against private individuals and organizations turned to measures against entire sectors of the Russian economy. In response, Russia has restricted the import of food items from countries that have introduced in relation to penalties: USA, EU, Canada, Australia and Norway. A ban were beef, pork, poultry, sausages, fish, vegetables, fruits, dairy products and some other products.


Western countries since March has repeatedly imposed punishment on a number of Russian politicians, businessmen and organizations because of the position of Russia in Ukraine. The last case of the use of such practices began in December limits, when the head of the U.S. announced an economic blockade of the Crimea, and in the sanctions List included a number of famous figures from the Crimea and Eastern Ukraine.
