A man has been detained by police in northwest Ukraine on suspicion of murdering his wife and his 70-year-old neighbor in a bizarre dispute over the washing-up.

Regional media said the suspect, a resident of the Volyn Region identified only as Vasily, carried out the murders in a drunken jealous fit.

Police told the NTN TV channel that the pensioner had invited Vasily and his 47-year-old wife home for dinner after a day planting potatoes together. At the end of the meal, the father of three flew into a rage when his wife began washing up. After an exchange of words, he stabbed his wife and the pensioner to death.

He then called the police and confessed to his crime. Police say he had a history of jealous attacks on his wife.
