Two Pakistani soldiers were killed by the Indian military Two Pakistani soldiers were killed after a firefight with Indian troops during a border crossing between the two countries in the disputed region of Kashmir, said Pakistani military.

The Indian army said it conducted a "surgical attack" along the disputed border known as the line of control to foil a "terrorist attack", according to the Director-General of India.

Lieutenant General Ranbir Singh told reporters on Thursday that the strikes were based on "specific and credible information" that terrorists were planning to strike in Indian cities, including Jammu.

"The operation was mainly aimed to ensure that these terrorists did not succeed in designing infiltration and carrying out destruction and did not put at risk the lives of citizens in our country."

Prime Minister of Pakistan Nawaz Sharif condemned the attack in a statement, calling him "without any provocation and undisguised aggression" by Indian forces.

The incident occurred less than two weeks after 18 Indian soldiers were killed in an attack by armed militants on a military base in Uri, about 63 miles (102 kilometers) from Srinagar, capital of Indian administrative function of Jammu and Kashmir.

It was one of the deadliest attacks, which took place on an army base in Kashmir, since militant attacks began in 1989, and sparked a furious war of words between India and Pakistan.
