In St. Petersburg celebrate the 73rd anniversary of the siege of Leningrad In St. Petersburg celebrate the 73rd anniversary of the complete lifting of the blockade of Leningrad. Today there will be dozens of commemorative events.

73 years ago on 27 January ended almost 900 days the siege of Leningrad. This date is the day when the city was saved from Nazi invaders, in the Northern capital is always celebrated widely. Solemn events traditionally begin at the house N14 on Nevsky prospect, where the inscription of the war years: "This side of the street is most dangerous when shelling". Today here are fresh flowers. On the eve of the flowers to the memorial at Piskarevsky cemetery was placed ex-Governor of St. Petersburg, speaker of the upper chamber of Parliament Valentina Matvienko.

Now comes the procession. Hundreds of people pass from the Eternal flame in the alley of the Piskaryovskoye cemetery, where the dead are buried during the siege, the citizens, the monument "Motherland". Until 1944 lasted the terrible blockade. The year before it was broken, and life became easier. But only in January 1944 the forces of the Leningrad, Baltic and Volkhov fronts liberated Novgorod. This meant that the road to Leningrad was finally open. Stopped hunger and devastating artillery shelling. The blockade affected every citizen.
