Frank-Walter Steinmeier was elected President of Germany The parliamentary Assembly of Germany, elected the social Democrat Frank-Walter Steinmeier, the country's new President.

The position of President in Germany is largely ceremonial, because the Chancellor is the official head of government and has a higher profile on the world stage. Steinmeier previously served as Vice-Chancellor and Minister of foreign Affairs.

He was elected by an overwhelming majority of the congregation, receiving 931 from 1253 votes. His predecessor, Joachim gauck will retire on March 18. "This country for many in the world became the anchor of hope," said Steinmeier after his election. "We give others the courage, not because everything is good, but because we showed what could be better," he said.

61-year-old Steinmeier was a critic of U.S. President Donald trump. He described trump in August, as a "preacher of hate" who "pursue a policy of fear", reports the German news Agency DPA. Steinmeier also expressed concern about reviews of trump that NATO, a political and military Alliance between North America and Europe, is obsolete.

European Council President Donald Tusk sent his congratulations to Steinmeier.
"Your appointment comes at a critical juncture for Europe. Many external and internal challenges facing the us could hardly be more serious. At such times, European unity is more important than ever, and I look forward to the continuation of the German contribution to the European project, "he said.
