France said that it has evidence that the chemical attack in Syria is the Syrian government. The attack killed 89 people.

The French foreign Ministry Jean-Marc Ayrault said that the samples taken after the attack in the rebel-held town of Khan shaykhun, in line with results from previous incidents. "We have some sources that indicate that the samples of sarin coincide with the samples developed in the Syrian labs", he said. "This method bears the signature of the regime, and this has allowed us to establish the responsibility in this attack."

French laboratory kept the samples after chemical attacks in Syria, and therefore were able to compare them, he said. In a tweet published by the French foreign Ministry said: "there is No doubt that it was sarin gas used. There is also no doubt in the responsibility of the Syrian regime".

International inspectors on chemical weapons from the Organisation for the prohibition of chemical weapons (OPCW) said last week they had found "irrefutable" evidence that sarin or a similar substance was used in the attack on 4 April in the town of Khan Shaykhun.

Russian President Vladimir Putin, a key Syrian ally, suggested meanwhile that the attack was carried out by forces seeking to overthrow the regime of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad. Moscow has also questioned the impartiality of the OPCW.

Press Secretary of the Kremlin Dmitry Peskov said Wednesday that Russia will not change its position in relation to the attack on Khan shaykhun in the light of the evaluation of France. "The Kremlin and President Putin still believe that an impartial international investigation is the only way to know the truth" - quoted Peskov in an interview with state TASS.
