The Supreme court of India upheld death sentences for rape in Delhi Four men convicted of gang rape that shocked India and drew the world's attention, will be executed. India's Supreme court on Friday upheld a lower court decision to sentence the men to death.

According to NewsNews, the decision was greeted with applause in the courtroom. Vinay Sharma, Akshay Thakur, Pawan Gupta and Mukesh Singh was originally sentenced in September 2013, but they appealed the decision in court. Another offender was a minor at the time and received a lesser sentence, while 6 the attacker died in prison.

The case led to protests across India and the intense media coverage around the world, shedding light on the widespread problem of India in relation to sexual violence against women.

On the evening of 16 December 2012, a student physiotherapist from Delhi Jyoti Singh Pandey left the cinema after watching the movie "Life of PI" with a friend. It was late when they left the cinema, so they boarded the private bus to go to their suburban home. Then began their nightmare. According to police, the bus driver and at least another 5 people were drunk and looking for "entertainment."

Police said the men took turns raping the woman, using an iron rod, the bus drove around the city for almost an hour. Her companion-a man was beaten when he tried to intercede for the girl. After the men dumped their victims on the roadside. After the rape injuries were so severe that some internal organs had to be removed. After 2 weeks, the girl died in a hospital in Singapore.

In the following days the police arrested and put in jail for 6 people. Thousands of Indians marched in protest against the crime committed in the capital and in cities across the country. They gave Singh the nickname "Nirbhaya", which means "fearless".

The crime prompted the government of India to create a Commission of justice Verma, to develop legal solutions to reduce sexual violence. It also passed laws increasing the penalties for such crimes and the creation of a Fund in honor of the victims.
