The 74-year-old actor - who lost his battle with cancer on Saturday (29.05.10) was lade to rest in Taos, New Mexico, the town where he wrote, filmed and edited his legendary movie `Easy Ride`.

Family and friendscame on two private planes from Los Angeles for the memorial service.

Local residents say the actor made a secret visit to Taos just a few months ago, accompanied by his older children.

Bonnie McManus, from the Mable Dodge Luhan House, said: "He was dressed really nice and looked like an English gentleman with his long coat and his hat, but he was so frail and thin.

"You knew it was his last goodbye to the house."

Earlier Taos Governor Bill Richardson paid tribute to the late Hollywood icon.

He said: "The actor will be remembered by many including myself, as an icon whose impact on the film industry cannot be measured."
