The actor is best known for his portrayal of Nate Archibald in American teen drama Gossip Girl. He was arrested shortly after midnight today for possession of the illegal substance.

"Chace Crawford was arrested in Plano, Texas for possession of marijuana ... cops confirm to us," gossip website TMZ reports. "Crawford was arrested just after midnight this morning for possession of marijuana under 2 ounces. The charge is a misdemeanour."

The 24-year-old - who is from Plano - was sitting in a car with a friend in the car park of Ringo`s Pub when police allegedly caught him with an unlit marijuana cigarette. Chace has paid his bond and is no longer in jail. He left shortly after 1am.

"He is not in custody," a police spokesman confirmed. "He already bailed out early this am."

Misdemeanour cannabis possession carries a maximum sentence of 180 days in prison and a $2,000 fine.
