Torrential rains leave 9,000 passengers stranded in China More than 9,000 passengers have become stranded at the Chengdu Airport because of heavy rains over the last two days, Xinhua news agency reported on Monday.

Flights from the airport were either delayed or canceled on Saturday and Sunday because of torrential rainstorms.

On Saturday, more than 200 flights were delayed and 20 flights canceled, stranding more than 10,000 passengers. The situation eased a bit on Sunday with only 11 flights canceled and just over 100 flights delayed.

As of Sunday evening the number of stranded passengers was at 9,000, though the airport`s administration said delays could continue through Monday.

Northwest China has been hit with heavy rains and flooding over the last 11 days, leaving at least 111 dead and 167 missing.
