The `Lord of the Rings` actor`s wife Georgina Sutcliffe submitted a petition to the High Court in London, citing "irreconcilable differences" as the reason behind the end of their two-year marriage.

Sean and Georgina, 32, have had a stormy relationship.

Their wedding was called off 24 hours before the event in January 2008 for "personal reasons" but then went ahead weeks later.

In July 2009, the 51-year-old actor was briefly arrested after Georgina accused him of assault, before she asked police to drop the charges.

The actress later downplayed the incident saying: "Everything is OK. Sean and I are at home together enjoying the sunshine.

"He was arrested. Everything was blown out of proportion. Sean is fine and I`m fine. There`s no problem between us."

In March this year, Sean denied divorce rumours saying: "Things are more settled. There will be no more divorce."

Sean married his first wife Debra when he was 19 years old.

He has two daughters from his seven-year marriage to his second wife, actress Melanie Hill and another daughter with his third wife, actress Abigail Cruttenden.
