Russia`s Tyumen to erect monument to Linux Linux devotees from the West Siberian town of Tyumen have obtained permission from the city government to set up a monument to Tux penguin, the mascot of the Linux operating system.

The monument is in the form of a winged Tux ready to take off into the air. The monument will symbolize the unlimited possibilities and independence of open software.

"The Tyumen authorities have backed our project. We are now looking for place where the monument will be erected," Sergey Mikhailov, the man behind the monument, said.

"I suppose that Tux will appear in Tyumen by the New Year," Mikhailov continued.

Linux was first developed by Linus Torvalds, a student at the University of Helsinki in Finland in 1991-1994. It is one of the most prominent examples of free and open source software collaboration.
