Search continues for 9 missing in south Russia floods Rescuers in Russia`s southern Krasnodar Territory continue to search for the nine people still missing after flash floods on Saturday, which killed at least 13 people, a local emergency services spokesman said.

"A search operation is underway near the village of Kirpichnoye, where the majority of those missing live," the spokesman said.

Torrential rains in mountainous areas caused rivers to overflow, flooding more than 20 villages. About 300 people, including 70 children, were evacuated. Local authorities imposed a state of emergency in the area.

The Russian emergencies ministry said more than 500 homes had been damaged by the flooding, although the regional administration put the number at over 1,000.

Around 12 bridges are also believed to have been damaged in the disaster. The emergencies ministry said restoration work was already being carried out on three car bridges.

The situation in the flooded area has stabilized and people are currently returning to their homes.

Krasnodar Territory governor Alexander Tkachev estimated that the damage from the flooding was worth several hundred million rubles and pledged to pay compensation to those affected.
