The 55-year-old actor - who was accused of domestic violence by ex-girlfriend Oksana Grigorieva last year - compared his life to a "three-ring circus" and explained while everyone goes through tough points at one time or another, it is important to "get through it".

He said: "We all go through things that are hard to bear at some point or other, and we have to get through it. About life, oh boy. You don`t want to hear about my three-ring circus."

The `Braveheart` star - who took a hiatus from acting from 2003 until 2010 - also revealed he underwent a "metamorphosis" during his career break, which helped to make appearing in movies "interesting" for him once again.

Mel added to Variety: "I got to a place where I thought, `I don`t know even know if I want to do this,` and walked away for a while.

"When enough time has elapsed and you`ve gone through some sort of metamorphosis for yourself, when you come back to it it`s kind of interesting again."
