Romanovs` belongings to go under the hammer Romanov-related lots are once again taking center-stage at Russian auction sales. Bonhams auction house in London is set to sell two illustrated inventories of jewelry belonging to Ksenia Aleksandrovna, the Grand Duchess of Russia.

The auction expects to raise £150-250,000 from the albums, which give an insight into the private wealth and taste of the Romanovs, as well as their family relationships.

The two volumes, which give a precise record of the lavish presents and exceptionally expensive belongings of Grand Duchess Ksenia, the daughter of Tsar Aleksander III and sister of Nicholas II, feature almost 1,000 items. These albums contain pictures and supporting annotations to each jewelry item she received from 1880- 1912.

Apart from revealing her privileged status and truly royal wealth, these albums also serve as a kind of diary, detailing who and when presented the Grand Duchess with this or that expensive toy.

The imperial Romanov family had many occasions to celebrate; modern Russians can hardly boast as many holidays today. The members of the royal family and those close to the Imperial Court gave priceless presents not just for birthdays and Christmas, but also for name days, Easter and a range of other occasions.

The albums describe the earliest gifts she received as a young girl, along with rings marking the births of each of her seven children.

Ksenia`s wedding celebration was one of the last times the imperial family commissioned jewelry from the Treasury. The exquisite emerald, ruby and sapphire sets, as well as the diamond necklaces, tiara and the pear collier-de-chien were gifts from her parents. The notes in the albums that are due to go under the hammer at Bonhams simply read "from Mama and Papa for the wedding".

The 32 years of records in Grand Duchess Ksenia`s albums also follow the development of fashion and styles in jewelry making. From antique pieces, the entries evolve into Art Nouveau and then Art Deco.

The auction will be held in London on November 30.
