200 astrakhan swans died of bird flu The Russian Agriculture Ministry confirmed Tuesday that the swans found dead in the Astrakhan region on the Volga delta near the Caspian Sea had died of bird flu.

"Analyses conducted in the Central and Saratov regional veterinary laboratories on November 22 identified the H5 avian flu virus," the ministry`s news release said.

On Wednesday, 200 swans were found dead in the Volga delta.

"According to the federal veterinary service, 200 dead swans were found in the Astrakhan region on the Volga delta between November 14 and 21," the ministry said.

The dead birds were incinerated. The location at which the swans died is 15-17 kilometers (about 10 miles) from the nearest villages, the ministry said.

Measures are being carried out to prevent the spread of infection.

Quarantine has been declared at farms located within a radius of 30 kilometers, the Emergencies Ministry southern department said.

Birds in the area, and people who come into contact with them, are undergoing regular medical examinations.
