Plenipotentiary Iskhakov: Habarovsk needs another source of water After ecological disaster - contamination of Amur as a result of explosion at chemical plant in China - it became evident that Habarovsk needs another source of water supply. This was announced by presidential plenipotentiary in Far East federal region Kamil Iskhakov.

"There are no guarantees that situation will not repeat", - emphasized plenipotentiary.

As press-secretary of plenipotentiary Evgeniy Anoshin informed, according to federal program of Far East and Transbaikalia social-economic development groundwater sources of Tunguska field should be exploited by 2010. For realization of the project annual investments in amount of 500 millions rubles are needed.

Earlier the governor of Habarovsky krai Victor Ishaev announced that "almost all water for needs of Habarovsk town is taken from Amur river. Meanwhile, almost 200 thousands of cubic meters can be taken from Tunguska field - this step will allow to solve problems of water supply for many years".

Another 100 millions rubles are needed in 2006 for reconstruction of water supply structures in Amursk town of Habarovsky krai and construction of complex for water purification from high iron and manganese contents in Komsomolsk-na-Amure.

Kamil Iskhakov also emphasized that "regional and federal authorities did everything in their power to minimize consequences of Amur pollution". An operative staff for prediction and liquidation of possible consequences of emergency situation has been formed.

By data of Far East regional center of Russian Emergency Ministry, front edge of zone, polluted by dangerous chemical compounds, is 170 km below Komsomolsk-na-Amure. The length of pollution reaches 210 km. Analyses of water tests reveal decrease of nitrobenzene concentration in Amur waters.
