"Russian spy" studied plant diseases Detained on accusation of espionage against Sweden Andrei Zamyatnin was studying diseases of crop and plant viruses.

29-year old Zamyatnin worked in Genetic Research Center of Sweden Agricultural University for several years. Sweden Press has declared that Zamyatnin is a citizen of Russia but this information is not supported by court or defense. Russian Embassy in Stockholm gives no comments about his detention.

As a reminder Zamyatnin was detained on February 16 and stood trial on February 18, 2006. As general prosecutor of Sweden Tomas Lindstrand has declared, Zamyatnin is accused of espionage in favour of a foreign country (without naming the country). Zamyatnin started undercover work in January of last year and caused damage to Sweden armed forces and national security of the country. Zamyatnin pleads not guilty.

In case investigation proves his guilt, Zamyatnin will be sentenced to 6 years of imprisonment.
