Neuroscientists have made a paralyzed rat run Swiss scientists were forced to flee completely paralyzed rat using only electrical signals. In 2015 the new system (Gait System) will be tested on humans, paralyzed due to a spinal cord injury.

The results of the experiment are shown in the journal Science Translational Medicine, and briefly about them are discussed in the press release of the Federal Polytechnic school of Lausanne.

One of the circumstances palsy and other neurological diseases are considered to be interference in the transmission of electrical signals between cells. However the same electricity returned paralyzed animals move. Swiss neuroscientists worked with rats whose spinal cord was severed in the middle (directly there and put the electrodes).

The researchers noticed that between the height growth of the hind limbs and frequency of electrical stimulation there is an exact relationship. Then, having learnt the gait of rats, scientists set" electrical impulses so that the legs of the animal were able to overcome barriers (stairs, pits).

"We have full control of the hind limb of the rat. Animal as they say unable to move them, but the electrical stimulation includes a severed spinal cord and causes the animal to move in the most natural way," he said neuroscientist Gregoire Courtine (Gr
