All the smugglers tried to smuggle across the border birds of three species: more than 200 wavy parrots, 30 Corella and of Zebra finches. The owners of the goods, three residents of Kyrgyzstan, bought birds on exhibition in Kharkov and decided to sell in the capital of Russia. Customs officers they were assured that they were not aware that birds need supporting documents.
